CARIBBEAN-MIGRATION-Haitian nationals among 69 migrants repatriated by US Coast Guard

MIAMI, CMC - The United States Coast Guard says it has repatriated 69 migrants including 26 Haitian nationals.

It said the crew of the cutters, William Flores and Sitkinak, also repatriated 43 Cuban migrants.

“These repatriations are a result of five separate interdiction cases throughout the Caribbean Sea,” The Coast Guard said in a statement.

U.S. extends embassy closings, lawmakers say threat serious

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States extended embassy closures by a week in the Middle East and Africa as a precaution yesterday after an al Qaeda threat that U.S. lawmakers said was the most serious in years.
The State Department said 19 U.S. embassies and consulates would be closed through Saturday “out of an abundance of caution” and that a number of them would have been closed anyway for most of the week due to the Eid celebration at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

T&T national security minister summons emergency meet over murders

(Trinidad Express) NATIONAL Security Minister Emmanuel George yesterday called an emergency meeting with the heads of the country’s protective services in the wake of a dozen murders being committed in less than 72 hours.

The meeting was chaired by George and included Police Commissioner Stephen Williams, Chief of Defence Staff Major General Kenrick Maharaj, Commanding Officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment Colonel Rodney Smart and Deputy Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson.

CARACAS, Venezuela, CMC – Venezuelan government officials have accused members of Cuba’s exile community in Miami and ex-CIA agent Luís Posada Carriles of plotting to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro. “The plans to physically eliminate Maduro are under way,” said National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello on Venezuela state-run television. “Where is this coming from? Miami… from Cubans who went there many years ago — who are living there — and have contact with Venezuela,” he added.

TRINIDAD-CRIME-Bloody weekend in Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad,  CMC – At least 12 people were killed during the long weekend here forcing national security officials to meet in an emergency session and a former national security minister criticising the coalition People’s Partnership government in Trinidad and Tobago over its crime strategy.
Police confirmed that the 12 people were killed over the long Emancipation weekend with National Security Minister Emmanuel George describing five of the murders as gang-related.
