DOMINICA-POLITICS-Opposition party elects new leader, gears for general election

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) gearing for a general election that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted could come before the constitutional deadline, has elected talk show host Lennox Linton as its new leader.
Former Prime Minister Edison James said that the party had already selected a significant number of its candidates for the elections. In the December 18, 2009 general elections  Skerrit’s Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won by an 18 of the 21 seats.

BAHAMAS-MIGRATION-Government pleased with talks in United States on illegal migration

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell has returned here following a one week visit to the United States saying he was pleased “with the progress” being made regarding the illegal migration of Cubans into the Bahamas.
Prior to his departure for Washington last week, Mitchell had indicated that “a negotiating team would travel to Cuba “with a view to settling the modalities of how there can be a quicker turnaround of migrants to Cuba”.

Britain says no to Syria intervention…as U.S. considers actions

LONDON/BEIRUT, (Reuters) – Britain will not join any military action against Syria after a stunning parliamentary defeat yesterday of a government motion on the issue, dealing a setback to U.S.-led efforts to punish Damascus over the use of chemical weapons against civilians. Following a 285-272 vote against a motion by British Prime Minister David Cameron to authorise a military response in principle, British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed Britain would not be involved in any action against Syria.

Discussions ongoing about use of medical marijuana

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - As various states across the United States legalise the use of medicinal marijuana, and others debate its benefits, it appears that Barbados might not be entirely immune from the discussion. This, as sources within the island’s Ministry of Health revealed to the Barbados Advocate recently that at the “highest level”, the use of medicinal marijuana to treat pain, cancer and sickle cell treatment was being discussed. However, they noted that “any decision made regarding its use and acceptance as a treatment in any setting would have be evidence-based”.

FSC, Central Bank sign MOU

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MOU) has been officially signed between the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Central Bank of Barbados ensuring greater stability in Barbados’ financial system. Principals of the two entities met at the Tom Adams Financial Centre yesterday afternoon to cement an already existing relationship as regulators of the securities, insurance, credit union and banking sector within Barbados.

TRINIDAD-POLITICS-Local Government election to be held October

21 PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday announced that Local Government elections will be held on October 21, but outlined her government’s intention to amend the Municipal Corporations Act. Persad-Bissessar made the announcement at a Post-Cabinet News Conference at the Office of the Prime Minister. The life of local government bodies in Trinidad and Tobago came to an end on July 26th by law Local Government elections are due by within three (3) months after the life of the municipal corporations came to an end.

TRINIDAD-POLITICS-Opposition condemns manner in which proportional representation introduced

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) has described as “vulgar” the decision of the government to amend the Municipal Corporations Act to introduce the concept of proportional representation in Trinidad and Tobago. Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, announcing the October 21 date for the Local Government election, said that her administration plans to introduce the concept of proportional representation that has been advocated as a fairer and stronger system for several years.

TRINIDAD-POLITICS-Chief Justice gets top national award

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – President Anthony Carmona has bestowed Trinidad and Tobago’s highest national award on Chief Justice Ivor Archie as the country prepares to celebrate its 51st anniversary of political independence from Britain on Saturday. Justice Archie was awarded the “Oder of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago” at a ceremony here in the presence of his parents, his wife, Denise and daughter Dr. Chinyere Archie as well as the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Orville London.

TRINIDAD-CRIME-Two arrested for murder of schoolboy

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The police have arrested two men in connection with Wednesday’s murder of a 16 year old on his first day at a new school. Kazim Maxine was killed as he waked out of the Laventille Technology and Continuing Education Centre. The police report that shortly after 2 pm Kazim and a fired were leaving the building when they were approached by two men who opened fire on Maxine, hitting him 12 times. He died on the spot, however, his friend was not injured.

JAMAICA-POLITICS-Governor General to receive second knighthood

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - Governor General Sir Patrick Allen will be knighted for a second time in a ceremony at his official residence on Monday. Sir Patrick who received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George from Queen Elizabeth II in 2009, will be invested as Knight of Grace in the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The ceremony at King’s House, will be officiated by Professor Anthony Mellows, Lord Prior of St John, who will represent The Queen.
