BRIDGETOWN,  Barbados - CLICO HOLDINGS BARBADOS Limited has been placed in receivership with immediate effect, thereby speeding up the likelihood of repayment for CLICO International Life’s (CIL) 25 000-plus policyholders.
Two years after being appointed judicial manager of CIL insurance company, Deloitte Consulting Inc. yesterday placed CLICO Holdings under receivership, stating that its decision was in keeping with the basis of its appointment to act in the interest of CIL’s policyholders

National Security Minister resigns

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – National Security Minister Charles Savarin has resigned paving the way for his nomination as a government candidate for the post of President of Dominica.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio on Thursday morning, said that Savarin’s name would be forwarded to the parliament ahead of the election of a new head of state on September 30.
He said the earlier nominee, Jennifer Wallace La Fond, had withdrawn her nomination for “personal reasons”.

Parliamentarians debate decriminalisation of marijuana

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The need for clarity on the difference between the decriminalisation and legalization of marijuana was highlighted by Parliamentarians at a recent sitting of the House of Representatives.
On Tuesday, Damion Crawford, of the ruling People’s National Party (PNP), in his contribution to the ongoing debate surrounding marijuana, argued that persons should not have a police record because of  an offense related to the use of the drug.

Orange day

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - On Wednesday, July 25, 2012, UNiTE, the UN Secretary General’s campaign to end violence against women proclaimed that the twenty-fifth day of every month would be dubbed Orange Day and it would be used to bring attention to preventing and ending what has been dubbed ‘the Global scourge’ ‒ violence against women and girls. The UNiTE campaign felt that once a year was not sufficient to highlight this growing problem and its Global Youth Network initiates activities such as encouraging the wearing of the colour orange.

Climate change has economic benefits — Pickersgill

CTO head wants legislation to regulate waste disposal in Caribbean waters

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius, CMC – Secretary General of the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Hugh Riley, Wednesday called for legislation to regulate the disposal of waste in Caribbean waters.
Addressing the second Sustainable Conference, Riley said the Caribbean had a responsibility to protect and preserve its water resources.
He said that water was at the core of the Caribbean’s efforts at sustainability and that it was important that the necessary policies be put in place to safeguard this vital resource.

United States provides funds to Trinidad and Tobago under CBSI

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The United States is providing Trinidad and Tobago with TT$11.3 million (One TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) for security assistance programmes through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
The agreement increases cooperative opportunities between the two governments to develop programmes aimed at increasing citizen security in the areas of juvenile justice, youth development, counter-narcotics, military and police capacity, drug demand reduction, and financial crimes investigations. 

Villalobos re-elected at IICA Director General

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, CMC – Victor M. Villalobos was on Wednesday re-elected Director General of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA).
The Mexican national, who holds a doctorate from the University of Alberta in Canada, will serve from 2014 to 2018.
Caribbean agriculture ministers join their counterparts in re-electing Villalobos said the IABA had “acknowledged the work of a team drawn from all parts of the hemisphere and characterized by technical excellence and commitment”.

St. Kitts-Nevis called for end to aviation taxes that could cripple vital tourism sector

MONTREAL, Canada, CMC – St. Kitts-Nevis Wednesday urged the international community against imposing aviation taxes that would have a deleterious on the economy of the twin-island federation.
Addressing the Plenary Session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assembly here, Tourism and International Transport Minister Richard Skerrit said that in a search for environmental solutions,” we must be careful to ensure that the growing imposition of aviation taxes do not work against our best efforts to grow local economies and reduce poverty”.

IMF shifts strategy on Caribbean economies
