KINGSTON, Jamaica - News from Trinidad & Tobago read: "Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders met in Port-of-Spain this past Tuesday and agreed to the formation of a Commission on the Economy as they seek to revive the ailing economies of the 15-member regional grouping."
CARICOM Commission on the Economy, said Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who chaired the CARICOM Bureau meeting, "should address the priority areas for fiscal sustainability, resource mobilisation as well as critical economic infrastructure services, particularly energy and ICT (Information Communication Technology)."

Venezuela president skips UN debut citing death threats

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro cancelled his debut at the United Nations General Assembly Wednesday, saying his enemies were plotting to incite violence in New York or even kill him. Just hours before he was scheduled to address the U.N., Maduro announced via Twitter that he had arrived back in Venezuela -- not New York -- after a six-day trip to China. During a national broadcast late Wednesday, Maduro said he was on a layover in Canada when he received information about two plots, one to incite violence and the other to kill him.

UN chief urges unity in approach to Syria

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — UN leader Ban Ki-moon yesterday pressed the major powers to overcome differences on the Syria war amid troubled talks on a UN Security Council resolution on Syria's chemical arms.
Ban hosted a lunch with the foreign ministers of the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France -- the permanent Security Council members --to put across his message, UN officials said.

Dino Bouterse’s arrest opens can of worms for his father

St Lucian opera singer dies

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - St.Lucian Cultural Icon and International Opera singer Blaise Pascal, 38, died in New York on Wednesday after a ten week illness, family sources have confirmed.
News of his illness was announced by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) last month. Pascal, a well known international tenor, left St.Lucia for New York in July to perform the lead role in a theatrical production at the Lincoln Center in New York when he came down with a bout of pneumonia.

Environmental activist returns to court following arrest

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Environmental activist, Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh has been ordered to return to court on Thursday following his arrest on Wednesday.
Kublalsingh has been charged with obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest. The drama unfolded on Wednesday morning when Kublalsingh who heads the Highway Re-Route Movement attempted to prevent the resumption of construction work on the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin.
He appeared before a Siparia magistrate in the afternoon and was granted TT$10,000 own bail.

Belize Coast Guard officer demoted following incident involving Dominica’s PM

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Belize National Coast Guard confirmed it had demoted an officer following an embarrassing incident involving Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who was a guest of the government for the country’s independence celebrations last week.
Commander of the Belize National Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Borland said that Petty Officer Richard Ogaldez had been stripped of his rank and demoted to ordinary Seaman. He said the demotion was the result of a disciplinary tribunal.

Jamaica pleased with trade mission to Dominican Republic

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) says it is pleased with the outcome of a trade mission to the Dominican Republic earlier this month.
JAMPRO president, Diane Edwards, said as a result of the September 10-14 trade mission one local company had acquired a trial order to a large supermarket chain; while another reported securing a joint venture partnership deal with an industrialist for a manufacturing plant in the Dominican Republic.

Former prime minister dismisses reports of a return to active politics

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Former prime minister Oliver Serpahin has rubbished reports that he is making a comeback into local politics.
“I have been resident abroad for the most part of the past six years and wish to state categorically that I have  at no time expressed a desire or demonstrated intent to form any other political organization for the forthcoming general elections in Dominica,” said Seraphin, who served as head of an interim government here between 1979-80.

Guyanese attorney declines post of DPP citing internet attack on integrity

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Guyanese-born attorney Kurt De Freitas, who was due to take up the post of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) here next month, is no longer accepting the post, Attorney General Levi Peter announced Wednesday.
Peter told a news conference that he had received a letter from De Freitas citing unsubstantiated statements about him on the internet as a reason for declining the job.
In his letter, De Freitas said that his decision to withdraw was not one he took lightly.
