HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NINTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (COTED), 16-17 June 2000,  Bridgetown, Barbados

The Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) has responsibility for overseeing all trade and economic development issues and covers all economic sectors of the Community.

This Meeting, its ninth focussed on the agriculture sector in addition to the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Attention was also paid to CARICOM external economic and trade relations and intra-regional trade arrangements.

While seeking to ensure that the key elements for the establishment of the CSME are in place namely, the following are being attended to:

MAJOR MINISTERIAL MEETINGS IN BARBADOS TO PUSH INTEGRATION PROCESS

A range of trade, economic and agricultural issues related to the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), is among the packed agenda for the Ninth Meeting of Ministers of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), which takes place in Barbados on 16th and 17 June, 2000.

COTED promotes trade and economic development within CARICOM and oversees the operations of the CSME.

BELIZE MOVES FORWARD ITS COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Government of Belize have agreed on a model framework through which the Prime Minister of Belize, who has responsibility for Sustainable Development issues throughout the Community, could effectively execute his mandate.

The programme outline was discussed during a two-day CARICOM Mission to Belize on 29 and 30 May 2000, to heighten interaction between the Secretariat and key sectors of the Belizean society, and to probe how the integration process is impacting on Belize.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES WEST INDIES CRICKET TEAM

On behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), I extend (from Belize where I am currently on mission with a Caricom Secretariat team), warmest congratulations to Captain Jimmy Adams and his team for the outstanding West Indies victory over Pakistan in the third and final Test Match in Antigua.

That the victory clinched the Test Series makes it all the more remarkable.

CARICOM observer missions to Haiti and suriname

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was among international organisations that Observed the 21 May 2000 elections in Haiti, and the Community will have a similar presence at the elections due in Suriname on 25 May 2000.

CARICOM COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETS IN BARBADOS 16-17 JUNE 2000

CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)  The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is engaged in an all out effort to complete the institutional framework to take forward the regional integration process. Among the critical areas being addressed is the implementation of Protocol VII in which case the Community Council of Ministers will be defining a way forward. They will also look at the future of the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) and review the progress being made towards the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

The Third Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on 8 -9 May, 2000. The Ministers attending were: the Hon. Janet G. Bostwick, Attorney General and Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Bahamas; the Hon. Billie Miller, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Barbados; the Hon. During the past year, St. Kitts and Nevis, has had the honour and the privilege, to chair the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR). In fact, we in St. Kitts and Nevis, have been very fortunate, to be the Chair, of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) and since January 1, to have taken over the Chairmanship of the Principal organ of the Community - the Heads of Government.
