Dr. Naresh Singh’s CARICOM contract to be scrapped

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The 15-nation Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on Wednesday announced that has rescinded the appointment of Guyanese development specialist, Dr. Naresh Singh as Deputy Secretary General. But Singh maintained that he has done nothing wrong that warranted such a move and he would leave the region to judge whether his failure to obtain clearances for two or three consultancies of less than one week each with the United Nations (UN) was enough to deprive him from serving in the number two spot.

Mitchell sworn in as new Prime Minister

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Leader of the New National Party (NNP) Dr. Keith Mitchell was sworn in as prime minister of this Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country less than 24 hours after his party swept aside the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in general elections in Grenada. Mitchell, 65, a mathematician, becomes the island’s ninth prime minister since attainting political independence from Britain 39 years ago. He served as prime minister for 13 years prior to 2008 when the NNP was defeated by an 11-4 margin by the NDC.

Barbadians gearing to elect new government

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Feb 20, CMC – Barbadians go to the polls to elect a new government on Thursday with opinion polls predicting a victory for the main opposition Barbados labour Party (BLP). But Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is telling voters that his ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) ,which won the 2008 general election by an 20-10 margin, is still the best party to take the country forward. “In the final analysis, the assignment in this election is coming down to a government that once again can be trusted,” he said in a television broadcast on Tuesday night.

What does Grenada whitewash mean?

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Newly re-elected Grenadian Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell, has one of the more challenging assignments of any political leader in the region. One of the immediate challenges that the Prime Minister faces is to increase the island’s output because, according to the Caribbean Development Bank’s 2012 annual report, output in Grenada fell last year. Stanford investors sue Antigua, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank

DALLAS, Texas, CMC – A group of former investors of the Antigua-based Stanford International Bank (SIB) has filed a civil lawsuit here against Antigua and Barbuda and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), claiming that they aided jailed Texas billionaire Allen Stanford in his massive US$7 billion Ponzi scheme. The former investors, calling themselves the Official Stanford Investors Committee, are seeking repayment of at least US$90 million in loans that Stanford allegedly made to Antigua and Barbuda.

Chavez’s return to Venezuela raises questions

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The announcement of President Hugo Chavez's return to Venezuela after a 10-week silence in Cuba is raising questions about his cancer treatments, his delicate health, and the political purposes that motivated his homecoming. Three messages appeared on Chavez's Twitter account early Monday saying he was back, and the government announced that he had arrived at 2.30 a.m. and was taken to Caracas' military hospital to continue with his treatments.

World Bank commends Jamaican Gov’t

WASHINGTON, DC, USA — The World Bank has commended the Jamaican Government on recent economic initiatives, including the National Debt Exchange (NDX), to secure the recent staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "I have been listening keenly to the development in Jamaica over the last couple of days and I think what has transpired is a move in the right direction. This will help to improve the economy of Jamaica and the World Bank stands ready to assist in whatever way we can," executive director of the World Bank Marie Lucie Morin said.

This is according to leading gastrointestinal oncologist, Dr Marcia Cruz-Correa, who was a facilitator at the Cancer Research in the Media workshop, supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
