KINGSTON, Jamaica - HAITI has unearthed real potential for Jamaica Broilers as the local-based company expands its reach in the Caribbean market. A year after setting up shop in that eastern Caribbean island, Donald Patterson, vice-president of accounting and information system at the Jamaica Broilers Group, said he expects "great things" from the earthquake-ravaged country.

PM says economy shows slight improvement

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the local economy has shown slight improvement during the first three months of this year , but that preliminary figures show a “deterioration” in April. “On the face of it, for the first three months, we have an improvement in the fiscal situation. But, I have seen the preliminary numbers, which have not been confirmed to me yet in relation to April and I see a deterioration in April.

Marathon debate on no-confidence motion Monday

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad- Next Monday’s debate on the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister will be a marathon one, lasting into Tuesday, Communication Minister Jamal Mohammed said yesterday. Speaking at yesterday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, Mohammed said all Government MPs would speak and were prepared to debate into Wednesday if necessary. The motion was filed by Opposition Leader Keith Rowley, who is calling on the Parliament to sanction the motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar and the Government.

Suriname looks into solar energy for its remote communities

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC - Suriname’s Government has announced that it will be investing in solar energy to bring electricity to remote communities across the country Gunzi, a Maroon village in the upper Suriname River region will serve as test subject for the project that was announced last Tuesday at the Cabinet of the President. Alternative energy company WTEC from the United States was contracted to execute the project, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources, national electricity company EBS and the Anton de Kom University of Suriname.

ST.JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC-Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer says he is backing new West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President Dave Cameron to advance the sport in the region. Prime Minister Spencer underlined his confidence in the new WICB president after wide-ranging talks between the two leaders in the Antiguan Capital. Dominica PM weds

ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit Saturday married Melissa Poponne, “his sweetheart for many years” according to an official statement. The statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that Skerrit, 40, and Melissa were married at the Bourne Roman Catholic Chapel, followed by a private reception at the Prime Minister’s private residence in Vieille Case.

Bahamas beefs up defence force fleet

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas says it will spend an estimated US$200 million acquiring nine medium-to-long range vessels to augment the Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s (RBDF) fleet. National Security Minister Dr. Bernard J. Nottage says he has signed a Letter of Intent with the Netherlands-based DAMEN Shipyards that also includes improvements to the RBDF’s existing bases and harbours and a 70 per cent increase in human capital. “This $200 million venture will represent the single largest investment to date in the Defence Force’s history,” Nottage said.
