CARICOM joins OAS in calling for free and fair elections in Haiti

WASHINGTON, Jul 20, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries Wednesday said they remained optimistic that free and fair elections will be held in Haiti in October even as strategies are being discussed to strengthen the democratic process in the French-speaking CARICOM country.

Chairman of the Permanent Council of the Organization of  American States (OAS), Ambassador Eliston Rahming of the Bahamas said he remained optimistic that the people of Haiti will find ways to strengthen their democracy.

CARICOM Heads of Government endorse Action Plan for Statistics

The necessity to underpin any action towards growth, development and empowerment of the peoples of CARICOM with statistically sound evidence has been the consistent rallying cry of statisticians. Regionally, there is an increasing demand for better data to inform decision-making. But that demand has exposed deficiencies in the statistical offices and has prompted undertakings to better equip statistical offices with the tools, human and otherwise, to do the job.

Getting Private Sector and Farming Communities CSME Ready

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat is continuing to ensure that key stakeholders are well informed about the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and its significant benefits. On Thursday, July 21, the first of a series of one-day CSME sensitization workshops kicks off in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Approximately 35 participants from the private sector and rural communities will convene at the Beachcombers Hotel for information sharing and dialogue regarding the CSME.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, said a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. the Hon. Keith Rowley, on July 18, has led to a deeper understanding of critical issues between the two countries.

Making a brief statement at the Office of the Prime Minister following the meeting, Mr. Holness said he and Dr. Rowley have developed a good friendship and understanding.

CARICOM Single ICT Space vital to compete

(Barbados Government Information Service) The vision of a Single ICT Space, articulated by CARICOM Heads of Government, is concrete recognition of the role that technology must play in the economic and social development of the Caribbean.

This was emphasised by Senator Darcy Boyce, Minister with responsibility for Telecommunications, (on Thursday) as he spoke at the Caribbean Broadband Forum in Port-of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Jamaica Welcomes Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister

Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. the Hon. Keith Rowley, and Mrs. Sharon Rowley, arrived in Jamaica today (July 17) for a four-day official visit.

They were met at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston by a welcoming party led by Prime Minister the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, and Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith.

CCJ to implement measures to reduce paper use in judicial process- CCJ President

President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Sir Charles Dennis Byron informed participants of the Hague Convention Conference that the CCJ is in the final stages of developing programmes that would reduce the use of paper in judicial processes throughout the region.

“That (programmes being developed) would facilitate that process in domestic jurisdictions throughout the region, so it’s something that we would like to encourage acceptance to,” Sir Byron said on Friday. The three-day Hague conference on private International Law concluded on Friday.

Region sees 2030 SDA as viable means for growth, development

“It is the firm view of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda offers a viable means for fostering growth and development in our region, where, despite some progress, economic transformation and sustainable development have been difficult to achieve.”
