Webinar: Towards Harmonized EV Charging Standards in SIDS
CARICOM Secretariat hosted a webinar exploring the harmonisation of electric vehicle (EV) charging standards across the Caribbean, drawing on lessons from Guyana’s recently completed EV Charging Technical and Safety Standards Project. Led by Dr. Surin Maloney and moderated by Dr. Nebert Blair, the session examined the region’s evolving EV landscape, the importance of interoperable charging infrastructure, and the role of standards in supporting sustainable transport, investment readiness, and climate commitments.
The discussion highlighted key findings from Guyana’s standards development process, including stakeholder engagement, regulatory coordination, capacity building, safety requirements, and the need for adaptable, future-focused frameworks. Participants also explored recommendations for a regional approach to EV charging standards that can support the growth of electric mobility across Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS), while ensuring safety, compatibility, and long-term scalability
