Policing marijuana—the UK experience

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Countries all over the world take different approaches to the policing of marijuana possession and consumption. In many places it is widely assumed that the drug is legal, whereas in fact it is technically illegal, but tolerated in specific circumstances, such as a decision not to prosecute those who possess small amounts for personal use. In the United Kingdom, marijuana is a “Class B” drug: it’s illegal.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Sometimes I feel like I have spent my life in court with teenage boys charged for possession of marijuana. I’m sure that’s part of the reason why I support Chief Justice Ivor Archie’s idea of decriminalising marijuana. I can personally testify that being charged for possession of marijuana means a case that will go on for years in court. I can’t tell you how many hours or how many years I have spent in court seeing one marijuana case postponed after the next—usually because the police didn’t bother to show up to argue their case.

Gopee-Scoon: Syrian conflict can impact on Caribbean

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Former Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon says the worsening Syrian crisis can impact negatively on members of the local Syrian and Lebanese community. But Andy Knight, director of the Institute of International Relations at UWI, St Augustine campus believes the repercussions would be minimal to this country. Gopee-Scoon, the Member of Parliament for Point Fortin and Knight views were sought in the face of military action being contemplated by the United States led coalition. 

T&T finalises new gas deal with Venezuela

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian -  T&T and Venezuela have reached a deal to jointly produce gas from fields located between the two countries, Venezuelan Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said. According to a Prensa Latina report, Venezuelan state-owned oil giant Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and Chevron Corp will produce the gas from unified offshore fields that contain nearly 12 trillian cubic feet of natural gas.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian -  - Dr Keith Rowley says yesterday’s Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was the clearest evidence of her People’s Partnership Government’s collapse in office, adding a return to the polls was the only option for T&T. “The Government has collapsed and the Prime Minister is totally out of her depth. The recent statement and Cabinet reshuffle provides all the proof we need,” Rowley said in a statement yesterday.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday promoted Gary Griffith, her former national security adviser, to the post of National Security Minister, “fired” two ministers and reshuffled and split the portfolios of several United National Congress (UNC) frontliners in her third Cabinet reshuffle. Griffith, who replaced Emmanuel George, former state board chairman Gerald Hadeed and one-time senator Raziah Ahmed will be brought into the Parliament as People’s Partnership (PP) senators.

Gary Griffith appointed T&T National Security Minister in Cabinet shake-up

(Trinidad Express) Gary Griffith has been appointed National Security Minister, becoming the fourth person to hold the critical post, since the Peoples Partnership took power three years ago.
The announcement was made today by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar when she addressed a post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, Port of Spain.
Former National Security Minister Emmanuel George is now the Minister of Justice, replacing Christlyn Moore.

Gary Griffith, who was the security advisor to the Prime Minister has been appointed National Security Minister, becoming the fourth person to hold the critical post, since the Peoples Partnership took power three years ago. The Prime Minister announced the changes to her Cabinet at a post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday afternoon.
