CCJ to deliver ruling on Shanique Myrie case

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is expected to deliver a land mark ruling on Friday in the case against Shanique Myrie, the Jamaican woman who sued the Government of Barbados.
Myrie, 25, who was granted leave by the CCJ to file the action, alleged that when she travelled to Barbados on March 14, 2011 she was discriminated against because of her nationality, subjected to a body cavity search, detained overnight in a cell and deported to Jamaica the following day.

CARICOM concerned over plight of Haitians in Dominican Republic

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General Irwin La Rocque said the 15-member regional integration movement is concerned at a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court in the Dominican Republic that may have an adverse impact on Haitians living in the Spanish-speaking country.
La Rocque told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that while he is seeking further information on the court ruling, anything that affects any member state of CARICOM would be of concerns to the region.

Warning for Caribbean countries

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries will have to change its modus operandi and the way it thinks about integration in order to deal with a changing global environment, CARICOM Secretary General Irwin La Rocque has said.
Delivering the “Distinguished Open Lecture CARICOM Lecture Series” at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Thursday night, La Rocque said that the region now finds itself at another juncture in the progression of its regional integration movement.

Police probe whether murders linked to Local Government poll

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Police are investigating the murder of two men, including a close relative of a candidate contesting the October 21 Local Government election on a ticket of the coalition People’s Partnership administration.
Police Public Information Officer, Acting Inspector Wayne Mystar said the deaths of 21-year old Shiloh Mc Intosh and Kernel Job, 27, were being investigated by law enforcement authorities, but could not say whether the killings were related to the upcoming poll.

Regional governance institute launches today

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute (CCGI) will be celebrating its formal launch today from 5 pm–8 pm at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad. BIRD FLU IS HERE

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- Bird flu has come to T&T.
Contacted last night, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan confirmed there are three cases of the H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as bird flu, in this country.
Khan said there was no need for panic and assured that the ministry and relevant authorities have the issue under control.
He said he will be meeting this morning with various persons at the Ministry of Health in Port of Spain, including the chief medical officer, epidemiologist and those involved in immunisation, to discuss the matter elaborately.

Bird Flu Alert! - Six cases confirmed

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The Health Ministry today issued a statement advising that six cases of influenza A/H1N1, common know as bird flu, have been confirmed locally. The Ministry is advising citizens to take health precautions.

‘Issue may require CARICOM mediation’

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran yesterday said CARICOM should use its goodwill to bring about a resolution to the controversy with respect to relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Last week the country’s Constitutional Court ruled the children of undocumented migrants who have been in the Dominican Republic and registered as Dominicans as far back as 1929 cannot have Dominican nationality, as their parents are considered to be “in transit”.

Trinidadian scholar killed in Kenya buried in his homeland

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – 31-year-old Ravindra Ramrattan was cremated here on Tuesday, more than a week after he was murdered during the attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Niarobi by Shabab militants. At least 68 other people were killed during the attack.
President Anthony Carmona led the dignitaries, including several government ministers as well as relatives, who attended the funeral service for the Trinidadian, who was employed as a research economist in the African country.

Sparrow responding well

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Slinger Francisco, aka the Mighty Sparrow, continues to do well.
According to a media release from his wife, Margaret Francisco, “I am happy to report that the Mighty Sparrow is responsive, resting comfortably and is slowly progressing to what we trust will be a satisfactory recovery.
