Food import bill down two per cent

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Agricultural production is up and an additional 4000 acres will be put into cultivation next year, Food Production Minister Devant Maharaj has announced. Speaking at the second ceremonial harvest launch of the Caroni Green Initiative at Orange Valley, Couva, Maharaj said the sector expanded by 5.1 per cent over the past year “The contribution of agriculture to the GDP was $345.9 million and has increased by 77 per cent to $610.8 million in 2013,” he said

Republic Bank acquires more shares in HFC Bank of Ghana

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Republic Bank says it now controls 40 per cent of the HFC Bank Ghana, after acquiring an additional 7.98 per cent shareholding in financial institution.
In a statement, the Trinidad-based bank said that it purchased 23,638,340 ordinary shares at a price of GHS 0.67 (US$0.31) per share, making it the single largest shareholder in HFC Bank Ghana.

A welcome review by Grenada

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The Grenada government took an important forward step last week in announcing its intention to review and make “necessary changes” to legislation that raised fears of potential disadvantage to free expression. In response to criticism by local, regional and international media interests, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell also promised to consult with Grenadian and regional media people before final enactment of the Electronic Crimes Bill, already passed by both houses of the St George’s parliament.

CAL manager suspended

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - State carrier Caribbean Airlines has suspended one of its managers as an investigation continues into what has been described as a million-dollar fraud involving the use of bogus credit cards which has already cost CAL more than $12 million in losses.
Sources familiar with the airline’s operations say due to CAL not adequately addressing validation measures for local and European credit cards, scammers have managed to evade detection by CAL officials and have managed to get refunds from sales activities with the airline.

Caribbean warned of debt trap

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Jamaican writer Rachel Manley has called on Caribbean governments and Central Banks to engage in visionary economic thinking to benefit the region.
She was at the time delivering the feature address at the 27th Dr Eric Williams Memorial Lecture, at Central Bank auditorium, St Vincent Street, Port of Spain, on Saturday.
Manley now lives in Toronto. Her grandfather, Norman Manley, was the founder of Jamaica’s People’s National Party (PNP) and was one of the leaders of the West Indian Federation.

Environmental activist returns to court following arrest

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Environmental activist, Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh has been ordered to return to court on Thursday following his arrest on Wednesday.
Kublalsingh has been charged with obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest. The drama unfolded on Wednesday morning when Kublalsingh who heads the Highway Re-Route Movement attempted to prevent the resumption of construction work on the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin.
He appeared before a Siparia magistrate in the afternoon and was granted TT$10,000 own bail.

United States provides funds to Trinidad and Tobago under CBSI

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The United States is providing Trinidad and Tobago with TT$11.3 million (One TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) for security assistance programmes through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
The agreement increases cooperative opportunities between the two governments to develop programmes aimed at increasing citizen security in the areas of juvenile justice, youth development, counter-narcotics, military and police capacity, drug demand reduction, and financial crimes investigations. 

IMF shifts strategy on Caribbean economies

PM urges UN to ratify arms treaty

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The death of T&T scholarship winner Ravindra Ramrattan during the recent terrorist attack at a mall in Kenya was another example of the consequences of the illicit arms flow across borders, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told the United Nations General Assembly yesterday. Persad-Bissessar spoke about Ramrattan’s death as she urged world leaders to ratify the UN’s small arms treaty during her address to leaders at the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
