Assessment of the Impact of the CSME
Many have wondered about the impact of the evolving CSME project. Under the SFCICP Programme, a firm was engaged to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the impacts and potential benefits of the CSME. The consultant experts concluded that despite the incomplete and uneven execution, the CSME has delivered important, albeit uneven, benefits to the Community by expanding market access, facilitating the movement of skills and capital, and strengthening the legal and institutional foundations for regional economic integration. Furthermore, the experts projected that full implementation of the core regimes of the CSME, improvements to regional transport connectivity and operationalistion of the Single ICT Space and regional capital market would expand regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) between 3.5 per cent and 5 per cent on an annual basis, and intra-regional trade would double to US$10-$11 billion in the next ten years (2026-2035), reflecting the creation of efficient regional agriculture value chain, expansion of manufacturing capacity and output, and growth in ICT-enabled services and regional tourism.
The conclusions and recommendations of the study, which was undertaken in the last nine months of 2025, are of interest to policymakers, regional and international organisations, development partners, investors, the business and academic communities, labour organisations, and, in general, nationals of the Community.
