CARICOM to monitor November 20 rescheduled elections in Haiti

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be monitoring the Presidential Elections in Haiti, rescheduled to Sunday 20 November 2016. The elections which were initially scheduled for Sunday 9 October 2016, were postponed after Hurricane Matthew pummeled Haiti and left in its wake death, destruction and displacement of people. CARICOM’s Electoral Observer Mission will be on the ground in Haiti from 16-23 November. Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission will lead the Mission which was requested by Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Pierrot Délienne.

CARICOM convenes 17th Meeting of the CARICOM Council for National Security and Law Enforcement

The Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM’s) Council for National Security and Law Enforcement (CONSLE) meets for its 17^th meeting on 21 November 2016, at the Headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown. Under the chairmanship of Barbados’ Attorney-General and Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Adriel Brathwaite, QC, MP, CARICOM Ministers with responsibility for National Security are expected to consider for approval, the CARICOM Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Action Plan (CCSCAP).

CARICOM, South Africa solidify diplomatic relations

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and South Africa on Thursday strengthened the long-standing diplomatic relations with the accreditation of a new High Commissioner, Her Excellency Xoliswa Ngwevela.

In accepting her letters of credence, Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said it was a “symbolic reaffirmation of the determination of South Africa and the Member States of CARICOM to augment a long tradition of friendship, solidarity and the promotion of shared values, not just amongst ourselves, but in the global sphere.”

Government of Haiti helps 1.4 million persons affected by Hurricane Matthew with CCRIF’s Payouts

The CEO of CCRIF SPC, Mr. Isaac Anthony met on Monday with Haiti’s Minister of Finance, Hon. Yves Bastien and his advisors to discuss the recent payouts of US$23.4 million to Haiti made under the country’s tropical cyclone and excess rainfall policies, as a result of Hurricane Matthew’s passage through that country last month.

Former CARICOM Youth Ambassador serves as UNESCO Panelist at Quebec Conference on the Internet and Youth

Former CARICOM Youth Ambassador and local youth advocate, Miss Sonia Boddie, recently travelled to Quebec, Canada, at the invitation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), where she served as a panellist at the Quebec-UNESCO Conference on “Internet and the Radicalization of Youth: Preventing, Acting and Living Together.”
