CARICOM CHAIRMAN PRAISES WEST INDIES TEAM ON WORLD T20 VICTORY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr the Honourable Kenny D Anthony, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, has showered congratulations on the West Indies cricket team following their victory in the International Cricket Council World T20 Championship held in Sri Lanka.

The CARICOM Chairman said the victory ensured that 2012 would be a memorable one for sport in the Region, following on the golden performances of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes in London earlier this year.

FIFTH ISSUE OF EPA NEWSLETTER FOR 2012 PUBLISHED

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The CARICOM Secretariat-based Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Implementation Unit on 10 October published the fifth Issue for 2012 of its flagship newsletter, EPA Implementation Bulletin. It focuses attention on the Second Meeting of the Joint CARIFORUM-EU Council (JC) and some recent preparatory meetings that have set the stage for its convening on 26 October.

CHAIRMAN APPLAUDS CARICOM-VENEZUELA RELATIONS UNDER PRESIDENT CHAVEZ

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed heartfelt appreciation to the government of Venezuela for its generosity in extending the PetroCaribe and ALBA initiatives to CARICOM Member States.

Those initiatives have contributed significantly to meeting the energy needs of the Region and to the implementation of social programmes and development initiatives in the Community, said Dr. the Honourable Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Chairman of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government.

USE SPORT TO BOOST ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, CARICOM DSG

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite told a meeting of CARICOM Ministers of Sports taking place in Guyana, that sport must be one of the critical tools used to boost economic activity in the Region.

GUYANA MINISTER OF SPORT SAYS SPORTS STILL NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY IN THE REGION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Guyana’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony has stated that despite the obvious benefits of sport and physical activity, the Region was still not taking sport seriously.

Speaking on Tuesday, at the opening ceremony of the 17th Special Meeting of the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) on Sport, the Minister said that not enough was being invested in it and extra lessons had robbed Caribbean children of play time.

AGRICULTURE TAKES CENTRE-STAGE IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Antigua and Barbuda will be a hive of activity next week as stakeholders in agriculture converge there for the eleventh Caribbean Week of Agriculture. The week of activities – 12-20 October, 2012, will be officially opened on Wednesday 17 October, 2012.

​(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) There can be no better time to discuss the issue of sport than in the current atmosphere of Caribbean success. The 27th Olympiad memories of the sterling performances and monumental achievement of the Region’s athletes remain fresh in our hearts and minds. And now the Region’s cricketers have added to this sense of euphoria by their resounding victory at the World T20 Championships.
