ECLAC says equality “guiding principle” for a paradigm change in the Caribbean

CARACAS, Venezuela, CMC - The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says equality is the “guiding principle” for a paradigm change in the Caribbean and Latin America.
In addressing the social summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) here on Tuesday, ECLAC’s executive secretary, Alicia Bárcena, presented the document, “Structural Perspectives on the Inequalities in Latin America and the Caribbean” which further explores the case ECLAC puts forward in Time for Equality: Closing Gaps, Opening Trails”.

Government extends tax concessions to first time home owners

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, , CMC – The St. Kitts-Nevis government says it will extend the tax concessions granted to first time home owners as its seeks to boost growth in the construction sector and stimulate the local economy. “Over the last two and a half years, government has extended the policy which was originally due to come to an end in April of 2012. Since then, this policy to assist poor and middle class families has been further extended on two occasions and ought to have expired in July 2013,” said Information Minister Nigel Carty.

Prime Minister and Attorney General threaten legal action in “emailgate” scandal

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and her Attorney General Anand Ramlogan have filed pre-action protocol letters against Opposition leader Dr. Keith Rowley as the fall out continues over the “emailgate” scandal in Trinidad and Tobago. Attorney Donna Prowell in the letter bars Rowley from repeating the statements or making “any similar defamatory statements,” failing which the parties will “immediately seek injunctive relief before the High Court” without notice to him. Rowley has 14 days to respond to the letter.

SIDF sells shares to Swiss investor

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The state-owned Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) has sold its shares in a company involved in a resort project here for more than EC$50 million (One EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) to a Swiss investor, Information Minister Nigel Carty has announced. “The SIDF has indicated that it does not wish to be involved long-term in the resort project, and having now seen the implementation of the construction phase of the project, has recently agreed to sell its share in the project to a Swiss investor in excess of EC$50 million,” Carty said.

Opposition, activist call for re-thinking formula for selling FCB shares

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) Monday called on the Trinidad and Tobago government to reconsider the formula used for privatising the state-owned First Citizens Bank (FCB). The FCB launched its initial public offering (IPO) of more than 48 million ordinary shares earlier this month in a move the bank says will be one of the largest single IPO offering in the history of the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange (TTSE).

CBU to meet in Guyana

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados-based Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) says it will hold its 44th annual general assembly in Guyana next month. It said the August 19 – 23 assembly will be attended by broadcast executives, industry partners and media specialists where they will discuss issues of digital transition, the business of broadcasting, public service broadcasting, new and traditional media and other relevant topics influencing the broadcasting environment.
