UNITED STATES-MIGRATION - US Coast Guard repatriates 11 Cuban migrants

MIAMI, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says crewmembers aboard the Cutter Margaret Norvell have repatriated 11 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba. The Coast Guard said while on routine patrol on Saturday, the crew of a HC-144 Ocean Sentry Aircraft, from Coast Guard Air Station Miami, located a “30-foot rustic vessel” off the coast of Marathon, Florida. “The Ocracoke crewmembers safely embarked 11 Cuban migrants aboard the cutter,” the Coast Guard said. “The rustic vessel was destroyed as a hazard of navigation.”

TRINIDAD-BUDGET-Budget day is September 3

PORT OF SDPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government will present the 2013-14 national budget on September 3 and dismissed suggestions that the announcement late Sunday night was aimed at a distraction from the upcoming Local Government elections. A brief statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that the date for presenting the fiscal package had been finalised after Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar held consultations with Finance Minister Larry Howai.

CUBA-POLITICS-Widow of late Cuban dissident calls for international inquiry

MIAMI, CMC – The widow of a Cuban dissident killed in a car crash in Cuba last year has called for an international inquiry into his death. Ofelia Acevedo, the widow of Oswaldo Payá, told reporters here that claims by the Spanish driver of the car in which Payá was travelling make it even more relevant for an international investigation. Angel Carromero, the driver of the crashed car, told the Madrid newspaper El Mundo last week that Payá and another dissident, Harol Cepero, were alive after the crash. Carromero said this suggested that both dissidents were later murdered.

GRENADA-DRUGS-Government urges caution as Grenadians celebrate annual Carnival

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada Drug Epidemiology Network (GRENDEN) says young people between the ages 15 and 19 years accounted for 50 per cent of the patients admitted to health institutions for the consumption of illegal drugs.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Ecclesiastic Affairs noted also that 83 per cent of persons arrested and charged for drug related offences were within the same age group.

GUYANA-ENERGY-President appeals for opposition concerning Amaila Falls Hydropower project

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – President Donald Ramotar on Sunday appealed for an end to partisan politics surrounding the Amaila Falls Hydropower project. In a release on Sunday, the President said although the United States based investor, Sithe Global has pulled out of the project, there is still a window of opportunity and he has spoken with Opposition leader David Granger urging the support of APNU (A Partnership for National Unity). It was APNU’s non-support of two Amaila matters in parliament last week that led to the developer, Sithe Global quitting the project.

No change in our position

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has defended its position regarding the multi-million dollar Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) even after president Donald Ramotar appealed for an end to partisan politics in the wake of the decision by the major United States investor to pull out. The US-based Sithe Global has said that it would only go ahead with its US$150 million investment in the US$850 million hydropower plant if all political parties in parliament supported the project.

Cash for citizenship for Indians

NEW DELHI, India, CMC – Cricket may soon not be the only connection Indians have with the Caribbean, according to reports here. The Times of India in a report on Sunday said St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Antigua and Barbuda have “rolled out attractive cash-for-citizenship programs to woo Indian immigrants.” It said that Antigua and Barbuda is the latest to launch a citizenship-by-investment (CIP) program, opening up its borders to Indian immigrants in a month.

LIAT route expansion a definite possibility

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Guardian - Additional routes are likely to be on the cards for regional airline LIAT. Speaking recently at the signing of the loan agreements between LIAT, the Caribbean Development Bank and the stakeholder governments of LIAT, Chairman of the Shareholder Governments and Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, said that the aircraft being purchased to upgrade the fleet, would allow the airline to go to other destinations within the region.
