CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHRONIC DISEASES SET FOR THE CARIBBEAN

Washington, September 14, 2007 (PAHO) – A major new campaign to fight chronic disease in the Caribbean is getting underway in an effort to stem “the worst epidemic of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease in the Americas,” with the participation of heads of government.

All set for Launch of CARIFESTA Month in Trinidad and Tobago

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) All is set for the launch of Caribbean Festival of Arts, CARIFESTA Month on 1 September 2006 in thirteen administrative districts of Trinidad and two administrative districts in Tobago. This exciting national initiative will capture 54 villages in a series of national celebrations leading towards the official opening of CARIFESTA IX on 22 September 2006.

NEW CARIFESTA MODEL LAUNCHED IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Under the theme Celebrating our People: Contesting the World Stage, a new model for the staging of the Ninth Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA 1X) was unveiled on Monday 12 June in Trinidad and Tobago, host country of the largest cultural festival of the Caribbean.

CARICOM LEADERS GO TO EUROPE FOR CRITICAL TALKS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be in Europe this week attending two Summit Meetings.

Seven of the leaders accompanied by Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, will attend the Third CARICOM-Spain Summit in Madrid, Spain, on 10-11 May and the Fourth European Union (EU) – Latin American Caribbean (LAC) Summit in Vienna, Austria, on 12-13 May.

Statement by the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Honourable Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, on the Planned Shipment of High-Level Radioactive Waste from France through the Panama Canal via the Caribbean Sea

The CARICOM Heads of Government at their 17th Inter-Sessional Meeting held recently in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, expressed strong condemnation of the proposed shipment by France of High-Level Radioactive waste through the Caribbean Sea.

The Caribbean Community wishes to reiterate that any accidental or deliberate spill of nuclear or toxic waste in the Caribbean Sea could pose a serious threat to the economies of the Region and is concerned that despite its repeated opposition to the shipments, the practice continues.

CARICOM CHAIRMAN DISSATISFIED WITH SPEED OF REGIONAL ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION

Patrick Manning, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago said he was dissatisfied with the pace of the process of economic in many Member States; a situation which he feels has left them “severely vulnerable to external shocks.”

CARICOM CHAIRMAN SAYS DEEPER CARICOM UNION IS INEVITABLE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of CARICOM, Hon. Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, told the opening session of the 17th Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads at the Port of Spain Hilton Thursday 9 February, that discussion of “deeper union” among the Member States of the Caribbean Community is inevitable.
