New day in politics

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - At the end, everybody “knew” how it would turn out. But hardly anyone had dared to assert with confidence the compelling likelihood of the result. Jack Warner, the challenger to the ruling order, yesterday won the Chaguanas West by-election that he had himself audaciously caused to happen. In 2010, Mr Warner had won the seat with such a majority as to devastate the hopes of those then in contention and future aspirants.

Kamla: I don’t believe we have lost

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The gloves are not yet off.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said last night that the United National Congress’ (UNC’s) defeat in the Chaguanas West by-election was no loss and instructed her troops to get ready for the local government elections.
In her concession speech at the UNC’s campaign office in Charlieville around 10 p.m. Persad-Bissessar offered congratulations to Independent Liberal Party (ILP) interim leader Jack Warner, but, in the same breath the Prime Minister urged UNC soldiers to get ready for another battle.

COP- Jack’s victory a “dangerous development”

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - THE Congress of the People, which vigorously campaigned in support of the United National Congress' candidate for the Chaguanas West by-election, on Monday night issued a statement in response to the election victory of interim leader of the Independent Labour Party, Jack Warner.

JACK ON FIRE

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - It’s a new day in the politics of the country.
Jack Warner’s green machine trounced Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s UNC in its heartland of Chaguanas West yesterday, shattering all tribal expectations with an impressive victory.
Warner garnered 69 per cent of the votes cast, Ameen 28 per cent and PNM two per cent. The people of Chaguanas West chose Warner’s Independent Liberal Party (ILP) over an incumbent Government, an action which could undermine the confidence of the People’s Partnership administration.

D-Day is here

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Today is decision day for the people of Chaguanas West. The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) is expecting 27,045 voters to visit the 14 polling stations today for the Chaguanas West by-election. While the single seat is being contested by five groups, several political pundits say the battle is a one-on-one between the United National Congress (UNC), with candidate Khadijah Ameen, and the Independent Liberal Party (ILP), led by former UNC chairman and MP for the area Jack Warner.

In an interview, the minister said local manufacturers are either already exporting their products or are ready to export and the sector globally is a lucrative one which manufacturers should capitalise on. “It’s a very mature sector at this point in time.

Better in the Bahamas? Not if you’re Haitian

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - His home in flames last Monday night, top priority for 74-year-old Lucien Janise was to snatch up his passport. “Everything burn, everything gone… The only thing I could save was my documents, that’s it. No clothes, no nothing.” Perhaps 50 mainly wooden houses burnt down on one night in a Haitian shanty town in the Bahamian capital, Nassau. At least 121 people from the 400-strong ghetto community on Joe Farrington Road were left homeless, maybe more. Some residents suspect an arson attack, aimed at clearing the property.

Ministers sue former colleague

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Local Government Minister Surij Rambachan has said he is taking legal action former national security minister Austin “Jack” Warner as the campaign winds down for Monday’s by-election in Trinidad and Tobago.
Rambachan said that Warner, who, according to the only published opinion poll here, is leading in the Changuanas West constituency, has been motivated by “personal spite and or ill will” in his attacks on him.
