CARICOM and Costa Rica Sign Free Trade Agreement

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) concluded its second free trade agreement with a country in the wider Caribbean with the signature of the CARICOM-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement today in Jamaica. Prime Minister P.J. Patterson on behalf of CARICOM and President Abel Pacheco of Costa Rica signed the Agreement in the presence of a gathering, which included members of the Costa Rican and Jamaican cabinets, private sector representatives of both countries, and the Secretary-General of CARICOM, Mr. Edwin Carrington.

Interim Summit Pledges Support for Americas-wide

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – Announced last year, leaders from thirty-four
countries in the Americas were called to focus and deliberate on three principal
topics, inter alia: combating poverty, promoting social development, and
strengthening democratic governance, at a Special Summit in the city of Monterrey,
Nuevo León, Mexico, January 12 to 13, 2004. Caribbean leaders were amongst the
invited Heads of State.

RNM Chief: CARICOM Participation at G-20 Meeting a Watershed

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – The G-20 – which was formed ahead of and rose to prominence at the ill-fated Fifth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference, this past September - met in Brasilia, Brazil, December 11 to 12. The meeting was convened ahead of a high-level WTO General Council meeting, set for December 15. The meeting took place at Ministerial level. It was intended as an interchange and coordinative session focused on how to advance multilateral agricultural negotiations and, allied to this, attaining progress in the stalled Doha Round.

RNM-AGCI Trade Seminar Lauded

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – A ‘CARICOM Regional Training Seminar’, entitled: “International Negotiations, Free Trade Agreements and its Impact in Export Promotion: The Chilean Experience”, came to a close today. Convened in Montego Bay, Jamaica, October 20 to 23, it was coordinated by the International Cooperation Agency of Chile (AGCI), in collaboration with the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM). The objective of the Seminar was to immerse participants in the technical and policy aspects of commercial/trade policy and the negotiation of trade agreements.

Caribbean Well Prepared for Cancún

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – “The Caribbean is well prepared heading into Cancún”. The Director-General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM), Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal, made these remarks at the close of the Second Special Meeting of the CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on External Economic Negotiations, September 4. The Special COTED was convened in Georgetown, Guyana, September 3 to 4. It was chaired by Hon. Billie Miller, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Barbados.

RNM/IICA Cooperation and Partnership Strengthened

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA – The Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) signed an important Cooperation Agreement, July 4. The signing took place on the margins of the Twenty-Fourth Meeting of CARICOM Heads in Montego Bay, Jamaica, July 2 to 5. RNM Director-General, Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal and Dr. Chelston Braithwaite, Director-General of IICA, signed on behalf of the two organizations.

CARICOM To Make Government Procurement Offers
