Sport
Programme Overview
In the Caribbean, sport is rarely just a game; it is a cultural anchor, a source of fierce regional pride, and a rare arena where the fractured islands of the archipelago historically stand together as one. Under the mandate of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), the CARICOM Sports Development Programme was designed to harness this raw athletic passion and transform it into a structured vehicle for youth empowerment, public health, and economic growth.
Through collaboration with bodies like the Caribbean Sport and Development Agency (CSDA) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), CARICOM’s framework focuses on two major social frontiers:
Combatting NCDs: With the Caribbean facing high rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, the sports programme advocates for physical education in schools as a frontline preventative healthcare measure.
Crime Prevention and Youth Engagement: In partnership with regional security arms, the programme uses sports as an intervention mechanism to engage vulnerable youth, steering them away from gang recruitment and community violence. As the CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General noted, even non-traditional activities like chess are actively promoted to boost educational outcomes and community resilience.
