New Institute of Maroon and Indigenous Studies Proposed for UWI Mona and Maroon Communities

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, The UWI Vice-Chancellor and Chair, CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) has welcomed the recommendation from Jamaica’s Maroon community to establish a new institute to research, document and share the rich history, culture and contribution of Maroon and Indigenous people. The CRC Chair shared this with a large gathering at the opening of the historic symposium on Maroons, held at The UWI West Indies Regional Headquarters (where) on 9 January 2025.

Keynote Address by CARICOM Secretary-General at 'CARICOM at Fifty' Symposium

CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, delivered the keynote address Friday morning (14 April 2023) at the opening ceremony of a symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Community being observed this year.

The virtual symposium, titled ‘CARICOM at the Crossroads: Rising to the Challenge of a New Era’, was organised by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Institute of International Relations of The University of the West Indies (UWI).

O'Neil Simpson looked the part of a world champion and well he might. Eyes alight and with a confident smile creeping seemingly unbidden to suffuse his countenance, the Cave Hill star debater sat down after his historic win of the coveted first prize in the World Public Speaking Competition at the 2006 World's Universities and Colleges Debating Championships held between December 27, 2005 and January 4, 2006 in Ireland, to recount his elation at the experience.
